Packaging waste had long been a visible issue on the Sparkasse Bremen campus: around 60 to 70 single-use containers were used every day. Since the introduction of our deposit-free reusable solution, only reusable containers have been used across the entire Sparkasse campus, with consistently positive feedback. Sparkasse Bremen demonstrates how sustainability can be implemented consistently and effortlessly in communal catering.
As a long-established financial institution with over 1,000 employees and headquarters on a sustainably certified campus in Bremen’s technology park, Sparkasse Bremen has been committed to ecological and social responsibility for years. The company pursues an ambitious sustainability strategy, from climate-neutral business operations to ESG-compliant investment products. With the implementation of the Relevo system in its company catering, Sparkasse is now also taking a consistently sustainable approach to packaging while actively strengthening its employees’ environmental awareness.
At the Sparkasse Campus in Bremen’s Technology Park, staff catering used to generate a significant amount of single-use packaging every day. Around 60 to 70 containers were used daily, these were mostly made from sugarcane or similar materials. Despite their supposed eco-friendliness, these to-go containers increasingly faced criticism: many guests voiced concerns about the packaging waste and its environmental impact.
For those responsible at Sparkasse Bremen, one thing was clear: a sustainable solution was needed. The new system shouldn’t complicate internal processes or shift costs onto guests. A traditional deposit system was ruled out due to its high administrative burden. The challenge, therefore, was to find a straightforward, deposit-free reusable solution that would both promote environmental awareness and be well received by guests and employees alike.
The switch to reusables was consistent and seamless. After various reusable providers were presented to local food service operators, Relevo convinced Sparkasse Bremen with:
With the wide range of bowls and cups, all our food and drinks can be safely and attractively packaged. The lending system also fits seamlessly into our on-site catering concept.
Relevo supported the implementation with comprehensive communication materials, on-site personal assistance and technical support for the setup of the app. The new system was immediately embraced by guests. Particularly noteworthy was how intuitive the borrowing and returning process via the app proved to be. Guests were also impressed by the modern, transparent design of the cups—suitable for both hot and cold beverages, as well as the microwave-safe containers. This enabled Sparkasse Bremen not only to reduce packaging waste but also to save storage space, all without creating additional effort for daily operations.
