Offering a waste-free lunch- that’s the mission of Butcheria Fleischerei Schmidt. With the implementation of Relevo’s digital reusable system, Butcheria Fleischerei Schmidt became the first butcher shop in Essen to serve meals in reusable containers and therefore leading the way in sustainable practices within the butcher industry. This is the success story of a company that proves how simple and seamless the reduction of packaging can be. For four generations has Butcheria Fleischerei Schmidt been producing and selling in-house made meat and sausage products at nine locations across North Rhine-Westphalia. Their team of 39 employees ensures that around 7000 customers are supplied weekly with fresh, regional products. Transparency is ensured from the barn door to the shop counter. They also offer a lunch service. All branches offer a daily changing lunch special for takeaway – and since July 2022, successfully in reusable containers.
Even before reusable packaging mandate came into effect, was Julia Schmidt, Butcherias Managing Director, certain that single-use was not a long-term option for their lunch service. She shares: “My team and I have never been big fans of single-use and all the waste it creates!“
Besides the waste problem, the quality of the packaging was also an important factor: “We simply find our food more appealing in reusable containers compared to the typical aluminium trays.” It was therefore clear that the right reusable solution. needed to be found.
At first, Julia Schmidt assumed that the Butcheria would need to implement its own reusable system, but then the wholesaler introduced her to digital system of Relevo: “The concept of ‚borrow instead of buy‘ really resonated with me!“
The Butcheria now uses 150 pieces of reusable packaging in various sizes. The variety of containers provide the flexibility needed for a range of meals. All meals are prepared and pre-portioned in reusable containers at the central kitchen. From there, they are delivered to the individual branches and served to customers. Through an app they can quickly and free of charge borrow the Relevo reusable packaging and enjoy their lunch whereever they prefer.
The system is simple, affordable and hygienic. I believe it’s highly beneficial to implement reusable solutions well before the reusable packaging mandate comes into effect, to ensure that you are fully prepared. Additionally, it is very well received by customers, who appreciate being able to reduce their packaging waste.
Julia Schmidt’s summary of integrating the Relevo reusable system into the business operations is consistently positive: “Our employees quickly understood the system easily incoporated it into their daily routines. We all agree that reusable containers enhance the quality of our to-go business.” The deposit-free, digital app solution poses no challenges for either employees or customers. Should a customer be unfamiliar with the system, ensures the Butcheria team that they receive helpful assistance and take their time to offer support.
Most visitors are very positive about the system right from the start. Often, the dishware is returned during the next purchase and the process integrates smoothly into existing routines. Offering reusable containers therefore does not create any additional workload for the company either. Julia Schmidt reports: “Once customers have the Relevo app, borrowing and returning is so quick that it doesn’t cause any extra effort – even during busy times.”
The quality of the reusable containers was also fully convincing. Neither the dishware nor the QR code stickers show any signs of wear after repeated use. Additionally, are the containers leak-proof, so customers don’t have to worry about spills during the transport. Due to these numerous benefits, would Julia Schmidt wholeheartedly recommend the Relevo reusable system to other butcher shops.
